An andalusian patio
Julio Romero de Torres, 1900

An Andalusian Patio, also known as Andalusian Idleness, is an oil on panel painting that Julio Romero de Torres made around 1900. It shows a woman seated on a chair in the courtyard of a house, a setting typical of domestic architecture in Andalusia. According to the available references, the sitter is Francisca Pellicer López, the painter's wife. The work belongs to the luminist phase of the artist, in which warm light and the calm atmosphere of the courtyard matter more than detailed description. The alternative title, Andalusian Idleness, points to the relaxed pose of the figure, an image the painter returned to in several compositions of Andalusian women. During the Civil War the republican government seized the picture, and after the conflict it was deposited in the Museum of Fine Arts of Córdoba, where it remains. In 2013 it was temporarily shown at the Carmen Thyssen Museum in Málaga as part of an exhibition devoted to the artist.
